Rhode Island DEM calls poster of racist signs a ‘moron’, says it won’t be tolerated
LINCOLN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management sounded the alarms after two home-made inflammatory racists signs were found at Lincoln Woods State Park.
Officials said whoever posted the signs is posing as the Rhode Island Parks and Rec Division.
The signs have since been taken down.
Frequent park-goers at Lincoln Woods State Park say with everything else going on in the world, there’s no room for hate.
The DEM says the Parks and Rec Division of the DEM did not post the signs, and they said whoever did post them is a “moron.”
“We think that whoever did this, whatever their intentions, that they’re hateful morons, hateful morons, so we don’t want anyone in the public to think for one second that we stand for that or tolerate it because we don’t,” said DEM spokesperson Mike Healey.
“This is not a DEM sign, we did not post these messages or these signs, and these messages actually really sicken us,” explained Healey.
With the park being the oldest state park in Rhode Island, Healey said it sees over a million visitors every year.
“I mean look around, this is a beautiful place, it doesn’t matter what color you are or anything like that, it doesn’t matter, it’s ridiculous,” said one park-goer. “It doesn’t take a genius to realize the parks and rec department wouldn’t post a sign like that.”
That park-goer, who wishes to not be named, said it’s sad someone felt the need to post the racial messages.
Roberto Pardron comes to the park nearly weekly to play soccer.
Pardron said he’s never seen anything like that at Lincoln Woods before.
“It’s kind of crazy, everybody should be treated equal, we are all one person, we are all one world, we already have enough crazy going on in the world,” he said. “There’s no room for that, that’s for sure.”
The DEM is asking the public to report similar signs if another one is spotted at 222-3070 to reach their police force.
