PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — There’s a new soccer team in Rhode Island and it’s already making history, selling over 1,000 season ticket deposits in the first hour they went on sale.

Monday, the United Soccer League Championship unveiled the name and logo for its Pawtucket team, calling it “Rhode Island FC.”

“The enthusiasm we have seen over the last 24 hours has been overwhelming and validates our strong commitment to Rhode Island,” said  Brett Johnson, co-founder of the club.

“In just our first hour, more than 1,000 season tickets deposits were placed, which is one of the strongest — and possibly the historically strongest — one-hour deposit sales in USL history,” added Johnson.

Rhode Island FC will compete in USL Championship in 2024 season and will play its home matches at Tidewater Landing, which is currently under  construction.

Season ticket deposits for the inaugural Rhode Island FC season went on sale at 10 Tuesday.

“We could not have done that without such a strong base of soccer fans and Rhode Islanders who have wanted nothing more than a team to call their own,” said Johnson.
