Rhode Island fire consumes 20 cars, delays Amtrak trains

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Officials say a fire has consumed 20 cars in a Rhode Island salvage lot.

Providence Fire Department Battalion Chief William Kenyon says the fire happened Saturday night at an auto scrap yard in Providence. More than 30 firefighters were called to the scene.

He says his crews arrived at the fire at around 6:20 p.m. and the fire was extinguished in less than an hour. No one was injured.

The fire caused debris to fall onto a nearby highway and its proximity to the train tracks led Amtrak officials to temporarily stop service.

Kenyon says one car exploded and had to be extinguished with foam.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the incident.
