PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island leaders kicked off the start of construction for the new state health lab Monday.

Gov. Dan McKee and the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation all attended the groundbreaking.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky was originally scheduled to join the event, but she tested positive for COVID over the weekend.

“Rhode Island has momentum – and this project is crucial to ensuring the momentum continues in the areas of public health and our life sciences economy,” said Gov. McKee

Earlier this month, McKee announced that the lab will be located in the I-195 Redevelopment District.

The 212,000 square foot, seven-story building will also be home to labs for Brown University and lease other space to local life sciences groups.
