A Rhode Island man has died following a para-gliding accident off the coast of Plum Island in Newburyport.

The 49-year-old was out with two friends on Saturday afternoon when he somehow crashed into the water.

Newburyport Police say his friends tried going in to save him, but the cold 35 degree water forced them out. They were later treated at the scene.

Coast Guard rescue crews were able to pull the victim out of the water, where they tried to perform CPR, but around 6:30 that evening he was pronounced dead.

The exact cause of death still remains under investigation. His name has not been released.
