Rhode Island motorists to get new license plates

CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island motorists will be getting new license plates.

The state Department of Motor Vehicles on Friday released the design for the new, deep blue plate. It will feature a gold yacht in the upper left corner, an image of Reliance, which won the America‘s Cup in 1903.

The words “Beautiful Rhode Island” and “Ocean State” are featured at the top and bottom of the plate.

The new plates will be rolled out starting next September. They will replace the familiar wave design that was first issued in 1996.

The agency says all old plates will be replaced by Sept. 1, 2017.
