PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ A Rhode Island nonprofit organization has been awarded nearly $200,000 in federal grants to remove marine debris from the Seekonk and Providence rivers and Upper Narragansett Bay.
Rhode Island’s congressional delegation helped secure the funds from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for Clean the Bay, Inc.
The Middletown-based organization will use the funds to remove pilings and other marine debris over the next several years.

It will also use the funding for outreach and volunteer opportunities.

Clean the Bay Executive Director Kent Dresser says debris removal will have a positive environmental, economic and social impact.

The Providence and Seekonk rivers and portions of the Upper Narragansett Bay have been polluted over the years by broken and abandoned pilings, wrecked vessels and docks, auto parts and other trash.
