Rhode Island Officials change emergency response number for Rhode Island motorists

By: Autumn R. Hawkins

State Police and RIDOT announce the change from dialing *77 to 911 for all interstate highway emergencies.

The change is due to the enhancement in technology enabling dispatchers to track a motorists’ location.

When calling *711, if a motorist was unaware of his/her location or could not respond, dispatchers were unable to locate the motorist.

Since all cellular devices have latitude and longitude coordinates when calling 911, this will ensure better communication in case of an emergency.

Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s Office of Highway Safety will be changing road signs from *711 to 911 to ensure motorists of the change.
