Rhode Island Senate GOP minority leader will retire

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Senate minority leader Dennis Algiere announced his plans to retire on Thursday.
The lawmaker will not be seeking re-election in November.
“The Rhode Island Republican Party would like to thank Senate Minority Leader Dennis L. Algieri for his leadership and dedication to improving the lives of Rhode Islanders throughout his three-decade career,” the state’s GOP said in a tweet.
“He set the foundation for senate Republicans and has led the caucus tirelessly,” the GOP continued.
Algiere was first elected to the Senate in 1992 and has been a minority leader since 1997.
