PROVIDENCE,R.I (WLNE)- Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed issued a statement Friday night condemning the Senate vote to deny witnesses and further evidence in President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial.

“The Republican vote to block witnesses and documents is a travesty,” Reed said. “New evidence continues to emerge and witnesses have come forward with additional information. I do not understand why my Republican colleagues are afraid to see and hear this information. “

Calling the decision a partisan blockade, Reed questioned Republican senators’ motives.

“Why deny readily available firsthand testimony that can help senators, and the American people, make an informed decision based on facts?” Reed said.

The statement echoed earlier words from the senator on Twitter.

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse was less specific in his reaction, posting a quote from the Old Testament on Twitter in the minutes after the vote.
