The Statehouse was briefly evacuated after a fire alarm sounded Tuesday afternoon.

The Providence Fire Department says it responded to the alarm in the building at about 2 p.m. Employees said there was a smell throughout the building, similar to the smell of rubber burning.

The Rhode Island Department of Public Safety says preliminary reports indicate there was an electrical issue with the boiler, which is located across the Statehouse on Gaspee Street. Investigators say the boiler was smoking, but there was no fire.

People were allowed back inside around 2:30 p.m.
