Rhode Island troopers begin wearing body cameras this week

SCITUATE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island State Police troopers will begin wearing body cameras this week.

The announcement was made via a news release Friday.

State police said uniformed troopers will start wearing the cameras this week and all uniformed troopers will be equipped with a body camera by th end of April.

“The cameras are an added key tool that promote accountability and transparency,” said Colonel Darnell S. Weaver, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety.

Troopers were first involved in a pilot program with the cameras from Oct. 2020 to Jan. of 2021.
