Rhode Islander Jared Donaldson Wins Opening Match at Newport Tennis Hall of Fame Championships

Rhode Island native Jared Donaldson had a dream come true when he took center court at the Newport Tennis Hall of Fame Championships on Monday.  Donaldson rallied to beat Austin Krajicek, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 and Jared advances to the second round.

Tuesday sees five of the eight seeds in action. No. 1 seed John Isner will face fellow American Rajeev Ram in a battle of two past champions at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

Monday in Newport 

On Monday in Newport, No. 7 seed Steve Johnson opened the tournament action with a center court win over Michael Berrer. Next up, John-Patrick Smith and Bernard Tomic went head-to-head in an Aussie battle. Smith, current wold No. 156, notched his first Tour level win with a big upset over Tomic, the tournament's No. 3 seed and the current world No. 25. No. 2 seed Ivo Karlovic survived a close call, prevailing over Illya Marchenko 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 6-4 after two hours and 23 minutes. Bill Talbert Center Court was electric in the last match of the day when Rhode Islander Jared Donaldson overcame Austin Krajicek in three sets to advance to Round 2.
