How it Happened
Rhode Island got its fourth straight victory by shutting out in-state rival Bryant Saturday afternoon.
Ryan Twitchell (2-0) picked up his second win in as many starts, outdueling Bryant’s Tyler Mattison (1-2).
URI (6-5) struck first when it manufactured a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Addison Kopack began the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Alex Ramirez. Kopack moved to third on a passed ball, then scored on a wild pitch. Austin White was hit by a pitch, and he moved around to third when Max Mircovich doubled to right field. White came in on the second passed ball of the inning, putting Rhody up, 2-0.
The Rams batted around in the fifth inning, breaking the game open with five runs. Tommy Cartnick got the rally started with an infield single. Kopack followed with a single down the right field line, moving pinch runner Greg Cavaliere to third. A walk to White loaded the bases for Mircovich, who drilled a three-run double to left.
Mircovich moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when the catcher’s throw sailed into left field. Josh Brodeur singled and advanced on a single by Xavier Vargas. Joe Fortin drove in Brodeur with a third straight single, giving URI a 7-0 lead.
Bryant (2-5) managed to load the bases in the top of the eighth with three walks. However, Nate Seprosky induced a fielder’s choice groundout to end the threat.
