KINGSTON, R.I.E.C. Matthews
earned his fourth straight – and sixth overall – Atlantic 10 Rookie of
the Week award, it was announced by the conference today.

Matthews averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.0 block,
and 1.0 steal per game in a 1-1 week for Rhode Island.  The 6-5 freshman
connected on 48.3% of his shots from the floor (14-29) and was
10-for-11 from the free throw line (90.9%).

His best performance of the week came in a road win at St. Bonaventure,
scoring 24 points (8-16 FG; 2-5 3FG; 6-7 FT) to go along with four
rebounds, three assists, and a blocked shot in 38 minutes.  He scored a
team-high 17 points earlier in the week against Saint Joseph's, while
also adding four boards, five assists, a block, and two steals.

The native of Detroit, Mich. has eight 20+ scoring games since January –
the most by any freshman nationally since the calendar changed. Six of
those have come in A-10 play.

Nationwide, Matthews is one of just six freshmen to average 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists.

Matthews joins Carlton “Silk” Owens as one of just three Rhody players
with at least six A-10 weekly rookie honors.  Owens earned six awards
during the 1984-85 season.  Lamar Odom earned A-10 Rookie of the Week on
10 occasions in 1998-99, en route to winning league Rookie of the Year
honors.
