RI cop gets suspended sentence for kicking woman

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A Lincoln police officer convicted of kicking a handcuffed woman in the head outside the Twin River Casino has been given a 10-year suspended sentence with probation.

The punishment was imposed on Edward Krawetz (KRA'-witz) on Monday in Providence County Superior Court. A state judge convicted Krawetz in January of felony battery with a dangerous weapon for kicking Donna Levesque, of Uxbridge, Mass. The encounter was caught on surveillance video as Levesque sat on a curb waiting for a patrol car to pick her up for booking on a disorderly conduct charge on May 31, 2009.

Krawetz has notified the court that he plans to appeal his conviction to the state Supreme Court. He has been suspended without pay.
