RI Councilman Charged with Making Crank Calls

BURRIVILLE, R.I. (AP) – A member of the Burriville Town Council has been charged with making crank or obscene phone calls.

Police say Stephen N. Rawson was arrested at home on Friday morning. The 62-year-old is accused of leaving threatening messages on the cell phone of 61-year-old Burriville resident William J. Mello.

Investigators say the crank calls were not politically motivated. The two men are acquaintances and were arguing over a third person who was not identified.

Police say Rawson left the messages on May 14 and 16. Mello went to Town Hall to complain about the calls on May 19.

Rawson is charged with making crank or obscene phone calls. He was released on $1,000 personal recognizance after his district court arraignment in Providence.

He did not immediately return messages. Mello declined comment.
