RI DEM launches new parking feature as State Beach parking expands to 75 percent

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – This weekend, Rhode Islanders didn’t have the best weather to head to the beach, but since the pandemic this was the first weekend Rhode Island State Beaches expanded their parking.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there has been limited parking which hasn’t been going too well.

In an effort to cut down on drop off lines and over crowding, parking capacity has increased to 75 percent.

RI DEM also launched a new feature on RI Parks where beach goers can go to check out parking ahead of time.

Mike Healey, Public Affairs – DEM said, “There’s three color codes… Green means good to go, the beach parking lot is at 50 percent. Orange means it’s about 80 percent, that means if your not already on that way to the beach, maybe think about not going. Red means its maxed out.”

The DEM hopes this will make it more convenient for Rhode Islanders, especially as summer is officially here and fourth of July weekend inches closer.
