RI factory to close, 128 layoffs coming

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Stanley Black & Decker is closing its East Greenwich nail and staples factory and will lay off 128 workers.

The company said Friday that the factory will close by December 2012. A spokesman says 75 workers will keep their jobs and work at a smaller facility at an undetermined Rhode Island location.

The East Greenwich factory makes nails and staples branded with the Bostitch name. The work done there will be moved to a new factory in Greenfield, Ind. In a statement, the company said it was making the move to keep the Bostitch business globally competitive.

At its peak in the 1980s, the factory had about 1,400 workers. Its shutdown continues a trend that's seen the number of state manufacturing jobs decline from 97,400 in January 1990 to 39,500 as of August.
