RI Found to Have Highest Suicide Attempts

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A new study concludes that Rhode Islanders attempt suicide at a higher rate than any other state. The Centers for Disease Control reported Thursday that one in 67 Rhode Island residents had attempted suicide in the past year. Nationally, one in 200 Americans attempted suicide.
Mental health advocates say joblessness, substance abuse and other mental illnesses play a role in prompting people to make a suicide attempt.
Yet Rhode Island also has one of the nation's lowest suicide death rates. Advocates say that suggests people who attempt suicide are getting treatment that prevents future attempts.
The CDC study used 2008-2009 data to create a state-by-state look at suicidal thoughts and attempts. Suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in 2008.
