RI Gov. Highlights New Seafood Marketing Law

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) – Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is heralding a new law designed to help the Ocean State's fisheries market local seafood.

Chafee, an independent, plans to join local leaders at the port of Galilee on Tuesday afternoon to formally enact the new law, which creates the Rhode Island Seafood Marketing Collaborative.

The collaborative will examine ways to assist local seafood producers in marketing their products locally. The state's General Assembly created the collaborative this year to help local fishermen and shellfish harvesters cash in on heightened interest in locally produced food.

Chafee will also highlight a new law creating tougher penalties for illegally taking striped bass.
