RI Lawmaker Loses Leadership Job After Pot Bust
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The top Republican in the Rhode Island House has lost his leadership position over a recent arrest in Connecticut on charges of drunken driving and marijuana possession.
Republican lawmakers Tuesday picked Rep. Brian Newberry to replace Rep. Robert Watson.
Watson, of East Greenwich, tells The Associated Press that he'll keep his House seat.
Watson was arrested last month after failing sobriety tests at a police checkpoint. East Haven, Conn., police say they found suspected marijuana in his pocket. Watson says he wasn't drunk and that he uses pot to treat pain related to pancreatitis.
Newberry, of North Smithfield, says the vote to make him leader was 6-2.
