RI Man to be Sentenced for Assault on Infant Son
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A Providence judge is set to sentence a 19-year-old Rhode Island man convicted of abusing his infant son who is now blind and suffers from developmental delays.
Prosecutors are seeking the maximum punishment of 20 years in prison for DeAnthony Allen at his sentencing set for Wednesday in Providence County Superior Court.
A jury found Allen guilty in November of first-degree child abuse. Prosecutors say Allen's 3 ½ month-old son fractured his skull and seven ribs after being assaulted in July 2010. The child is now 17 months old. Prosecutors say the boy's mother is expected to speak publicly at Allen's sentencing.
Prosecutors say Allen is the first defendant to be sentenced for child abuse since Attorney General Peter Kilmartin announced the creation of a child abuse unit last month.
