RI Man to be Sentenced for Robbing Elderly Women

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A Rhode Island judge is set to sentence a 50-year-old man convicted of robbing four elderly women in shopping plaza parking lots.

Michael Brooks faces up to 35 years in prison at sentencing scheduled for Friday afternoon in Washington County Superior Court.

Prosecutors say Brooks pleaded no contest in September to four counts of first-degree robbery. Authorities say he robbed four elderly women over three days in August 2010 at shopping plaza parking lots in Narragansett, East Greenwich and North Kingstown.

Prosecutors say one victim broke four ribs and had head lacerations.

Authorities describe Brooks as a career criminal with an arrest record dating back to his teens. They say he was paroled in January 2010 after serving a 13-year sentence for burglary in New York.
