RI Police Chief Accused of Theft Surrenders Guns

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The defense attorney for a suspended Rhode Island police chief accused of stealing $714 from the purse of a stripper says his client is at home and doing “fine.”

Attorney John Harwood says Col. John Whiting “has a lot to be proud of” and has had a “great” law enforcement career. The 57-year-old Whiting did not appear on Wednesday for a bail review
in Sixth District Court in Providence. Harwood says Whiting was court excused.

Whiting, of North Attleborough, Mass., has surrendered his firearms and undergone a mental health evaluation. Another bail review has been scheduled for Oct. 12. Whiting is not required to
attend.

Police say Whiting stole $714 from the purse of 21-year-old Justina Cardoso after the car she was riding in crashed following a police chase.
