RI Rep. Langevin now Supports Gay Marriage

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – U.S. Rep. James Langevin of Rhode Island says he now supports gay marriage, calling it a matter of “tolerance and freedom.”

Langevin, a Democrat, is a liberal and has never actively opposed gay marriage. But he has previously backed civil unions for gay couples instead of supporting gay marriage.

He tells The Providence Journal that many people weren't ready for gay marriage.

But Langevin said the introduction of a gay marriage measure in the Rhode Island General Assembly is one reason he's changed his mind. Such measures have failed in recent years.

He also cited his personal reaction to witnessing a commitment ceremony between a gay couple.

In an opinion piece in the Journal on Saturday, Langevin said lawmakers should honor the state's founding tradition of tolerance and “do the right thing.”
