RI Reports First Human Case of West Nile Virus

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Rhode Island health officials have announced the first human case this year of West Nile Virus.

The Department of Health said Wednesday that a man in his 50s from Providence County had a confirmed case of the virus.

Health officials say the man developed symptoms on Aug. 25 and was hospitalized the same day. The man, who was not identified, has recovered and left the hospital.

The department's health director, Dr. Michael Fine, said the case was another reminder of the increased risk of exposure to mosquito borne-illnesses at this time of year. He urged people who spend a lot of time outside to use bug spray with DEET.
