RI Saw More New Business Filings in 2011

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A report on the number of new businesses in Rhode Island is offering glimmers of hope for the state's battered economy.

Secretary of State Ralph Mollis said Thursday that 6,846 new corporate entities filed paperwork with his office in 2011.

That's about 70 more new businesses than in 2010. It's also the first time since 2007 that the number of new business filings has increased over the past year.

Mollis says that while the number of new business is reason for optimism, not all the numbers are positive.

Nearly 6,630 corporate entities closed in Rhode Island 2011, about 450 more than closed in 2010.

The state's unemployment rate for December was 10.8 percent, up from 10.5 percent in November. The national jobless rate is 8.5 percent.
