RI Senate Puts Off Vote on I-195 Panel Nominees

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The Rhode Island Senate has delayed for nearly two weeks a vote on the nominations of seven people picked to oversee redevelopment of the Interstate 195 corridor in Providence.

The Senate vote was originally scheduled for Thursday, but will now occur on Oct. 3.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee nominated the people to serve on the I-195 Redevelopment District Commission. The commission will manage revitalization of the “Knowledge District” being opened up by the demolition of old Interstate 195.

Chafee picked real estate developer Colin Kane to lead the commission. Other nominees are Barrett Bready, Barbara Hunger, Diana Johnson, John Kelly, Mark Ryan and Michael Van Leesten.

The vote was pushed back to ensure compliance with legal requirements relating to legislative votes when the General Assembly is not in session.
