RICHMOND, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island State Police said a girl died after a crash on Interstate 95 in Richmond early Sunday morning.

State police said they were called just after 4 a.m. to a single-car crash on Interstate 95 north near exit 3.

At the scene, police found a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu on the right shoulder of the highway. The car had hit a tree.

The juvenile male driver was found sitting outside of the car with minor injuries, according to police. A girl was found trapped inside in the front passenger seat with “significant” injuries.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

State police said because of the ages of those involved, their names will not be released.

The agency noted neither the driver or the passenger is Rhode Island residents.

No further information was immediately released.
