RI Wants Designated Driver for New Year Revelers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Police and public safety officials are reminding Rhode Island motorists to identify a designated driver over the long New Year's weekend to avoid driving after drinking alcohol.

Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare and Rhode Island State Police Acting Maj. Wilfred Hill are hosting a news conference Thursday to highlight the “Designate Before You Celebrate” campaign.

The officials are also reminding people to obey seat-belt laws. Other people are also expected to attend the press briefing, including the executive director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the head of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association.

The event is taking place at the Providence Public Safety Complex.
