GLOCESTER, R.I. (WLNE) — The Department of Environmental Management said it is launching a pilot program to alleviate congestion at the Bowdish Reservoir Boat Ramp at George Washington State Campground.

The program will allow boaters without a camping reservation who wish to launch their vessel to reserve a parking space to use the ramp.

Three parking spaces and one handicapped parking space will be designated for non-campground users, and only three vehicles with boat trailers or cartop boats and one handicapped parking space for boat trailers or cartop boats will be allowed access to the boat ramp.

The DEM said there are two reservation periods, one from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the other from 3 to 9 p.m.

The department said that the program aims to limit unauthorized traffic while still allowing non-campers access to the water, as non-campers do not have access through the campground without a reservation.

The reservation program will be in place during the camping season, which runs from the second week in April to Oct. 31.

More information on the program and how to reserve a space can be found here.
