RIDOT urges drivers to take extra precautions as construction picks up

PROVIDENCE, RI (WLNE) – The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is urging drivers to take extra precautions on the roads as construction season starts up again.

In light of National Work Zone Awareness week RIDOT is reminding drivers to be aware of construction workers on the side of the road and to always slow down in work zones.

“Each work zone is populated by people who are our moms, our dads, our brothers, our sisters, our sons, our daughters,” RIDOT Chief Engineer Rob Rocchio said Wednesday. “They want to get home to their families just like you do. You can make sure that that happens.”

Across the U.S., a work zone crash happens every five minutes, and every week there is at least one death.

There has not been a work zone fatality in Rhode Island in years.
