NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island State Police Capt. Peter Chabot will be Block Island’s interim police chief.

The council voted unanimously to appoint Chabot as the interim chief.

Chabot will be taking over for Matthew Moynihan, who is leaving the island to be the next police chief in South Kingstown.

Moynihan has been the chief on Block Island for roughly one year, after originally being brought over as the interim chief from RISP.

Chabot’s first day in the role is expected to be June 25.

The captain has been with the agency for 24 years, currently serving as the assistant detective commander.

Town Manager Mary Anne Crawford told the council she hopes to present them a full-time candidate to vote on by the end of July.
