Roger Williams Park Zoo announces birth of two red wolf puppies

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Roger Williams Park Zoo announced the birth of two new red wolf puppies.

The zoo posted photos on social media of the baby wolves in their den.

They are the second litter of the zoo’s red wolf parents, Brave and Diego. They have an older sister, Saluda.

They were born on April 29.

Staff say they spend a lot of time in the den but took their first steps outside over the weekend. Those who visit the zoo this summer may catch a glimpse of them in their habitat.

They said the birth of the new puppies is crucial because red wolves are critically endangered.

“As of February 2023, there were approximately 235 red wolves in 49 Red Wolf SAFE facilities across the country,” staff wrote in the post. “The birth of these pups is critical for the survival of this critically endangered species.”

Animal care and veterinary staff at the zoo will continue to monitor them with an infrared camera in their den. Staff say the next month is highly important for their development.

The zoo has not announced their names.
