PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Louis Perrotti, Roger Williams Park Zoo’s director of conservation, was honored for his work Monday by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with a Recovery Champion Award.

Perrotti first received this award in 2020 for his work in continuing the efforts to increase the endangered American burying beetle’s population, which he has led the charge on for the zoo since 1994.

For over two decades, Perrotti has also collaborated with groups to release thousands of American burying beetles on Nantucket in hopes of bringing back its population there.

This ceremony was postponed twice because of the pandemic.

The event took place at the Roger Williams Park Zoo Education Building in Providence.
