The investigation was conducted by a former State Police detective who independently investigated each claim. Those on the list are not necessarily guilty, and those who have been accused but are not on the list does not mean they are innocent.

On the Diocese website, Bishop Thomas Tobin released a video message in regards to the report.

“[It’s] a difficult but necessary moment in the life of our diocese and church,” Tobin said. “An expression of the transparency we want to encourage and the accountability we need to accept.”

Tobin went on to apologize to all the victims of abuse.

According to court documents from 2007, the church said there were 125 clergy members that have been accused, far more than the 50 names released Monday.

“Very hard to believe 75 of those priests they found the accusations not to be credible,” said Dr. Ann Hagan Webb, a survivor of church abuse. “How bizarre does your accusation have to be that it’s not credible.”

Dr. Webb, there are still many questions that went unanswered when the Diocese released the report. She said there are names listed that have never been made public.

“One of the things that are missing is how many people per priest were accusing them,” she said. “Some survivors may be sitting in their homes, not realizing that there was another person abused by their perpetrator, and this could give them the courage to come forward.”

Before the release of the report, the Diocese released a statement in a press release.

“As this list is made public, it is our hope that it provides healing and consolation to those
who have been harmed and is a sign of our ongoing commitment to transparency and
protecting children and youth,” the statement read.

According to the Diocese, investigations into abuse will continue and the list is subject to change.

The Fall River Diocese is expected to release a similar report at a later date.
