NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — A man was able to swim to shore after his sail boat caught fire Wednesday evening just off land in North Kingstown.

According to fire officials, a call came in for a sailboat fire from a fellow boater just after 5 p.m. in Allens Harbor.

Officials said the man on board was able to swim to shore and was evaluated by EMS on land. He was OK.

The marine task force was activated and firefighters were able to put the blaze out in about 30 minutes.

Fire officials said the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management was notified and a salvage company will have to be contacted to remove the boat from the water.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal.
