NEWPORT, RI (WLNE) – The sailing school vessel, ‘Oliver Hazard Perry’, is searching for volunteers to come sail, work, and train on the square-rigged ship.

Applicants must be 18 or older and willing to donate their time.

Volunteers will partake in all aspects of operating, maintaining, and sailing a large square-rigged vessel.

These include steel and wood maintenance, vessel operation support, volunteer program support, outfitting training, and many more duties.

Volunteers can start now as the school says now is the best time.

Regular work parties are held every Wednesday and Saturday from 10-4 p.m..

Volunteers may also work any day of the week but need to check with the chief mate first.

The ship is currently located at Fort Adams State Park in Newport.
