Salt trucks prepare for freezing weekend, icy roads

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE)– Slick, icy roads are expected after high winds and heavy rain barreled through Southern New England.

Temperatures are expected to drop well below freezing Friday evening and last through Monday.

Nature’s Frontier Landscaping geared up for the icy conditions by loading salt trucks in Cranston.

“Tonight is the perfect storm– it’s going to be a mess this whole weekend,” said Mathias McGonigle, owner of Nature’s Frontier Landscaping. “We’ll have seven trucks out tonight, and about fifteen guys here and there nonstop. We’re going to do early mornings, middays, and nights for the next few days.”

The company says they will use more than 160 tons of salt to treat the roads.

McGonigle warned, “There’s going to be hidden ice everywhere. No sun, no heat. Where is the water going to go. It’s just going to linger around.”

McGonigle says to go slow and take main roads if you do have to drive.
