Second discrimination lawsuit filed against New Bedford Police Department

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) – Another former New Bedford Police Officer is suing the department alleging retaliation and discrimination based on sexual orientation. It’s the second lawsuit filed against the department in the past month.

According to South Coast Today, the plaintiff is Bryan Oliveira and he alleges he was subjected to derogatory slurs by a detective and that his superiors failed to address or remediate alleged harassment.

Oliveira is now an officer in the Attleboro Police Department.

Last month, former officer Macaila Saunders filed a similar suit claiming she was discriminated against because she’s a woman and was mistreated by three superior officers.

A spokesperson for the New Bedfod Police Departments says they haven’t been served and the department doesn’t comment on pending litigation.
