CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) – Rhode Island State Police have charged a second person in connection with the assault of a guard at the ACI in May.
Joshua H. Becker, 31, an inmate at the ACI, was arrested Wednesday after an investigation revealed he allegedly provided the weapon with which fellow inmate John Carillo stabbed a correctional officer in the facility’s Maximum Security sector.
Becker is currently serving 15 years of a 30-year sentence on charges of first-degree robbery, felony assault with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to commit a felony following the armed robbery of a Smithfield gas station in 2010.
The investigation revealed that Becker allegedly provided Carillo with the weapon, a sharpened piece of metal commonly known as a “shank” on the morning of the assault.
Becker was arraigned in Third Division District Court Wednesday and bail was set at $25,000 with surety. Becker was also presented in violation of his bail and was remanded back to the ACI pending further action in court.
The correctional officer wounded in the assault was treated and released from Rhode Island Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
