Secretary of State warns businesses about phony solicitation

 By The Associated Press

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Secretary of State of State Nellie Gorbea is warning business owners not to be misled by a deceptive letter that appears to come from an official government source.

Gorbea says the letter is mailed by an entity calling itself “Annual Business Services.”

She says several businesses reported receiving it, along with an official-looking form titled 2015 Annual Minutes.

It directs recipients to submit the form and a $125 fee, payable to Annual Business Services.

Gorbea says the solicitation is timed to coincide with the deadline for when corporations that earn a profit must file an annual report with the Department of State.

Gorbea says she doesn’t want business owners to be misled into filing the form and paying the $125 fee, thinking they’re filing their annual report with the state.
