SEIU Local 580, AFSCME Local 2882 call on State Officials to fill DHS vacancies

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE)- Service Employees International Union Local 580 along with American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Local 2882 are calling on State officials to fill the seventy-eight Department of Human Services vacancies.

SEIU Local 580 President Matthew Gunnip released the following comment, “Backlogs due to vacancies at DHS have caused a lack of access to vital resources for Rhode Island’s most vulnerable children, families and elderly, including delays to obtaining SNAP benefits for food security, child care benefits, health insurance coverage, and cash assistance to meeting basic needs during the bone-chilling winter months, amongst the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“It’s been very concerning. I lost roughly, since 2019, close to 50 members. So we’re down about 50 employees.” AFSCME Local 2882 President Rafael Martinez continued, “When it comes to DHS leadership, their actions to match their words. Our frontline workers received an all-staff message, just Friday, that DHS is working to ‘eradicate structural and systemic oppression within our organization and in the community’ yet their lack of urgency to fill vacancies is non-existent.”
