WASHINGTON, D.C. (WLNE)-Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz has placed a hold on outgoing Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo’s confirmation as U.S. Commerce Secretary.

The hold was announced Thursday. Sen. Cruz tweeted his remarks, saying he will “lift the hold when the Biden admin commits to keep the massive Chinese Communist Party spy operation Huawei on the Entity List.”
This move comes after 20 Republican Senators have rallied behind House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul in putting a hold Raimondo’s confirmation after she refused to commit to keeping Huawei on the Commerce Department’s Entity List.

Following Cruz’s announcement, McCaul released a statement regarding the hold and Huawei, “I am pleased Senator Cruz agreed with myself and over 20 other House Republicans and has placed a hold on Governor Raimondo’s confirmation until the Biden Administration commits to keeping Huawei on the Entity List.”

He reiterated how significant he believes the threat of Huawei to be, “Huawei is not a normal telecommunications company – it is an arm of the CCP’s military that poses a significant threat to U.S. national security and supports the CCP’s genocide in Xinjiang. The Biden Administration must take this seriously. No more delays or promises to circle back.”

Governor Raimondo’s hold could last up to 30 hours.
