Sailing Regatta Considered For Newport In September

No America's Cup pre-regatta in Newport this year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Newport has not been chosen to hold a
preliminary regatta for the America's Cup sailing race this year,
but it's in the running for next year.
The team choosing venues said Friday that Newport did not make
the cut for 2011. The state Economic Development Corp. says it
continues to negotiate for a spot in 2012.
Newport was a top contender to host the 34th America's Cup in
2013, but lost out to San Francisco. Its consolation prize was
competing to host one of several regattas before the main race,
called the America's Cup World Series.
It was being considered for a September regatta. The team had
said the sticking point was whether improvements could be made to
Fort Adams State Park before then. The cost was estimated by EDC
Director Keith Stokes at about $500,000.
