Series of retail store robberies in Fall River

Fall River police are investigating a series of smash and grabs that occurred this morning, resulting in a shots fired incident.

FALL RIVER, M.A. (WLNE) – Fall River police are investigating a series of smash and grabs that occurred this morning, resulting in a shots fired incident.

Police currently have one person in custody for questioning after two stores were robbed on Main Street and shots were later fired at police officers.

Big Bazaar Indian Market on North Main Street in Fall River was broken into.

Surveillance video footage were able to capture a person driving a white utility van and someone dressed in a dark coat, and mask who smashed through their front door and went straight for the cash register.

Cameras show someone wrestling with the cash register and stealing $900, before looking straight at the camera before ripping it down.

This person then took off in the white van and robbed another nearby store around 5 am.

With the help of surveillance footage, officers were able to track down the white van after the second break in which lead to a short police chase.

A police officer situated between his cruiser and the fleeing van attempted to break the van’s driver’s side window, with his firearm, causing his firearm to accidentally discharge.

Fortunately, no officers were hit by the gunfire.

Officers were eventually able to track down the van again.

One person has been taken into custody and is currently being questioned by police.

No arrests have been made at this time and the person in custody is only being questioned and not considered a suspect at this time.

This is still an active investigation and the Fall River Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect.
