Headstones vandalized in North Providence cemetery

NORTH PROVIDENCE, RI (WLNE) – Gravestones at a historic cemetery in North Providence fell victim to vandals right before Memorial Day.

The stones at the cemetery inside Stephen Olney Park were found by the town’s Department of Public Works on Tuesday, knocked off their bases and split into pieces.

The cemetery is the family burial plot of Captain Stephen Olney who served in the Revolutionary War.

“He started his military career with the North Providence Rangers, and then after his career, he ended up being the Town Council President of North Providence, and also a state legislator of Rhode Island,” said North Providence Police Lieutenant Thomas Jones.

Police said they don’t currently have any leads, but are actively investigating. The vandalism charge would be a felony.

Anyone with information is asked to contact North Providence Detective Matthew Phelan at 401-231-4533 ext. 141.
