Shaw’s closures impact workers, nearby businesses

Six Shaw's Supermarkets will be closing around the region on Saturday, and if there's an up-side – it's the incredibly low prices.

On Friday the Woonsocket location was packed with customers who saw discounts up to 95 percent on some items.

But for many Shaw's employees the sale is a sign of tough times to come.

“Tomorrow's going to be a tough day, we're all women, we've all bonded, even our kids, everything,” said Gayle Bresnahan, a 30-year Shaw's employee who was laid off as a result of the Woonsocket closure. “My future was to retire from Shaw's. That was my plan but unfortunately that has now changed,” she said.

A Shaw's spokesman told ABC6 News on Friday that the company was able to keep the vast majority of employees on the payroll by transferring them to surrounding stores.

Nearby businesses are also bracing for impact. “There's no big draw to this area so all the local businesses are going to feel the pinch,” said Joseph Carreiro, owner of Yolks, a diner next to the Shaw's.

Carreiro says he expects to see a 10% decline in business after the Shaw's closes because of lost foot traffic in the plaza. He says he's already seen a significant decline as other stores in the strip mall have closed.

Five other Shaw's supermarkets will shut their doors on Saturday:

-Fall River, MA

-Fairhaven, MA

-Stoughton, MA

-Taunton, MA

-Westerly, RI
