Sheppard, Mitchell Earn Preseason Honors, URI Picked Seventh In Atlantic 10 Men’s Poll

KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island guard Jeremy Sheppard and center Makhel Mitchell both earned spots on the 2021-22 Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Preseason Team, which was released Wednesday morning.

The conference also announced the results of the preseason poll. The Rams were picked seventh by the league’s panel of coaches and media members. St. Bonaventure was the unanimous pick for first place in the poll.

Sheppard – Rhode Island’s leading returning scorer – earned third-team honors. He averaged 11.3 points, 2.8 assists and 1.2 steals per game in 2020-21. A starter in all 24 games he played, giving the Rams 30.4 minutes per game. Sheppard shot 39.4 percent from the 3-point arc, making 37-of-94 from long range. He also hit 76.7 percent from the free throw line.

Mitchell was one of five players named to the all-defensive team. In his first season with URI, Mitchell established himself as one of the best big men in the conference. On the defensive end, he averaged 1.7 blocked shots and 4.0 rebounds per game, often cleaning up opposing possessions. He ranked fourth in the league and 51st nationally in blocked shots per contest. Mitchell scored 9.6 points and grabbed 5.6 boards overall, giving the Rams an impact presense on both ends of the floor.

Rhode Island received 231 points in the poll, one spot behind Davidson (260) and one spot ahead of George Mason (160). The top five in the poll were St. Bonaventure (392), Richmond (359), Saint Louis (325), VCU (288) and Dayton (274).

Fans can see the Rams in action for the first time Thursday, Nov. 4 when Rhody hosts Johnson & Wales in an exhibition game at the Ryan Center. The game tips off at 7 p.m.

The season officially gets underway Tuesday, Nov. 9 with a home game against Boston University.
